Company sectors
Use these SUIDs to classify employer industries in the Employer Data API.
Overview
Company sectors classify employers by industry and business type using a 3-tier hierarchy: broad categories (Tier 1) to specific Subsectors (Tier 2 and 3).
The sector hierarchy helps:
- Job seekers find employers in their industry of interest
- Employers accurately represent their business type
- Search match job seekers with relevant employers
Use sector SUIDs when creating or updating employer profiles to ensure accurate industry classification.
Example usage
Specify sector SUIDs in the sectorSUIDs field of the CountrySpecificEmployerAttributesInput object when calling patchEmployer:
mutation UpdateEmployer { patchEmployer(input: { employerId: "example-employer-id" countryCode: "JP" countrySpecificAttributes: { sectorSUIDs: ["MSQWR"] # Financial Services } }) { employer { id countrySpecificAttributes { sectorSUIDs } } }}Find the right SUID
- Identify the tier 1 sector: Find the broad industry category that best matches the employer (such as "Financial Services", "Healthcare", "Retail")
- Check for subsectors: Find more specific tier 2 or tier 3 categories that better describe the business.
- Choose the most specific match: Use the most specific tier that accurately describes the employer.
- Consider multiple sectors: Some employers operate in multiple sectors and might benefit from multiple SUIDs.
- Use the SUID: Add the 5-character SUID code to the
sectorSUIDsarray.
Understand the hierarchy
The 3-tier structure provides classification flexibility:
| Tier | Categories | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Broad industry categories | "Financial Services", "Healthcare", "Retail" |
| Tier 2 | More specific subsectors in an industry | "Staffing & Recruiting" under Professional Services |
| Tier 3 | Highly specific business types | "Recruiting and Staffing" under Staffing & Recruiting |
Not all tier 1 sectors have tier 2 and tier 3 sub-categories. Some industries are specific enough at tier 1 or tier 2.
Best practices
- Use the most specific tier: Choose tier 2 or tier 3 subsectors to provide accurate classification.
- Verify the match: Ensure the sector represents the employer's primary business activity.
- Consider multisector businesses: For companies that operate across multiple sectors (such as a retail company with restaurants), use the primary business activity.
- Update as needed: If an employer's business focus changes, update the sector SUIDs.
- Check Japanese labels: For Japanese employers, verify the Japanese label matches the business type.
- Use tier 1 for conglomerates: Tier 1 sectors might better represent large diversified companies that operate across many subsectors.
